His sketches of the cartoon “Garfield” earned him recognition from comic book creator Jim Davis
Williams’ mother says drawing helps her relax when she feels anxious
But, before sketching celebrities, she sketched cartoons, starting with “Garfield” and catching the attention of comic book creator Jim Davis.
Davis couldn’t help but shout it out and share some advice on Facebook. Williams printed out his commentary and read it aloud.
“The more you draw, the better you become, and you’re already drawing like someone three times your age. Keep it up!” Williams read Davis’ comments.
Her mother, Tameka Bond, says she noticed Williams had real talent when she was 5 years old. One morning they were late for church. She said her daughter had to finish a drawing.
“When I walked into the room to go see this drawing she made, my mouth dropped,” Bond said.
She says Williams has trouble concentrating, but drawing makes her feel a little less anxious. Williams can see how that helps.
“It calms me down, because all I have to do is do what my mind tells me,” she said. “Do what my mind tells me, then do what my hands tell me.”
Williams says she wants to sell her drawings to museums one day. Until then, she will stick to sharing them on Facebook.
